Photogrammetry - Imitation Mosasaur Jaw

Introduction

I found this fossil on eBay - it is one of thousands of imitation mosasaur jaws that are sold on the internet. The jaw is made from some sand and resin with real Mosasaur teeth and what appears to be small partial fragments of real mosasaur jaw bone embedded in a jaw shaped mould with a false matrix. Although the jaw is imitation, it is still a nice piece to have in a collection and it is a good example of how imitation fossils are made.

A nice article on these can be found here: dinosaursrocksuperstore.com

Photogrammetry

I took a series of photographs of the jaw and processed them using Meshroom to create a 3D model of the jaw. It's quite a rough model, but it's good enough to show the jaw in 3D. The viewer itself is a model-viewer by Google that allows you to view 3D models in the browser (modelviewer.dev).
